Compared to silica gel dehumidifying materials, fiber-type dehumidifying materials have higher dehumidifying accuracy, larger capacity, faster rate, and better scenario performance.
1. Humidity control accuracy
Silica gel humidity control materials: The error value is ±5% of the target humidity;
Fiber-type humidity control materials: The error value is ±3%.
Silica gel humidity control materials: Ideally, they generally require "pre-adjustment" of the target space, but most collection conditions do not allow for pre-adjustment. Additionally, external temperature/humidity environments are prone to change, which can lead to larger humidity control errors in the practical application of humidity control agents.
Fiber-type humidity control materials: Do not require "pre-adjustment" of the target space before use, can quickly control the target space within the standard humidity range, are convenient to use, and have high humidity control efficiency.
2. Humidity control capacity
Usually, within the target humidity range, the greater the humidity control capacity, the better the product performance.
The table below shows a comparison of the humidity control capacity of major brands of silica gel humidity control materials used for cultural heritage preservation abroad under different humidity ranges.
RH Range | German Brand P | Japanese Brand A | Fiber-type Humidity Agent |
30%–40% | 6% | 6% | 10% |
40%–50% | 8% | 4% | 15% |
50%–60% | 8% | 9% | 16% |
60%–70% | 6% | 18% | 20% |
70%–80% | 2% | 13% | 18% |
80%–90% | 2% | 7% | 18% |
Note: Taking the reasonable preservation humidity range (RH50-60%) for cultural relics such as calligraphy, paintings, textiles, and animal specimens in collections as an example, the performance of "fiber-type humidity control agents" is 1.8 to 2 times that of current foreign brands.
3. Humidity control rate
The faster the "moisture absorption and release" speed of humidity control materials, the shorter the time it takes to reach humidity equilibrium inside the container, which indicates better humidity control performance of the material.
When the container's sealing is poor, the air humidity will be in a dynamic process. Therefore, the role of humidity control materials is to act as quickly as possible when the humidity equilibrium is broken, to restore the container to the target humidity, and to keep the relative humidity in a "stable" state.
"Fiber-type humidity control materials" are sheet-shaped and have a large specific surface area in contact with air; whereas silica gel humidity control material particles are in a "stacked" state within the packaging. Therefore, the humidity control rate of "fiber-type humidity control materials" is faster than that of silica gel materials.
