3. Origin of mineral desiccants
Mineral desiccants mainly use natural palygorskite, also known as palygorskite or attapulgite. It was discovered in the Ural Mountains of the Soviet Union by Savchenko in 1862. In 1913, Ferchman named it Palygorskite based on the mineral desiccant mine area he discovered. Later, this mineral was also found in the Attapulgus area of Georgia, USA, and in the Montmorillon area of France, and was named Attapulgite by Dela Blaire in 1935. In 1976, Chinese scholar Xu Jiquan translated it into "attapulgite" based on the sound of "attapulgus" and the crystal structure characteristics of the mineral. It has been used domestically in recent years. Attapulgite is a hydrated magnesium aluminum silicate clay mineral with a 2:1 type layer chain structure. Its ideal molecular formula is: (Mg, Al, Fe)5Si8O20(HO)2(OH2)4·4H2O, and the theoretical chemical composition is: SiO2 56.96%; (Mg, Al, Fe)O 23.83%; H2O 19.21%. The attapulgite mineral rotates 180° at the tetrahedral corners along the y-axis at regular intervals, forming chains and channels parallel to the x-axis (fiber extension direction, i.e., a-axis, length 5.2A°). There are 5 octahedral positions in the attapulgite chain, and the channel cross-sectional radius is (3.7A° × 6.4A°). The channels are filled with zeolitic water. The attapulgite fibers are about 0.5~1μm long, with a length-to-diameter ratio of 20:1, and some fibers are more than 1 cm long. The crystal shape is needle-like, rod-like, and fibrous.
Attapulgite has a low specific gravity (2.0~2.3g/cm3), Mohs hardness of 2-3, is sticky and plastic when wet, has low shrinkage during drying, does not crack, has strong water absorption (up to 150% or more), PH=8.5±1, and due to its internal multi-channels, has a large specific surface area (up to 500m2/g or more). Most cations, water molecules, and organic molecules of a certain size can be directly adsorbed into the channels. It has stable electrochemical properties, is not easily flocculated by electrolytes, and has good stability at high temperatures and in salt water.
Due to its excellent properties, attapulgite is widely used in the petroleum and chemical industries. It is worth noting that attapulgite has a very high specific surface area, excellent adsorption performance, strong selective adsorption capacity, large cation exchange capacity (CEC), and high viscosity. These special properties determine its excellent performance as a desiccant.
4. Common fields and promotion
Applicable range: Widely used in products that cannot use oil seals or gas phase sealing, such as: instruments, meters, equipment, electronics, furniture, leather, luggage, shoes, hats, clothing, textiles, pharmaceuticals, optical instruments, electronic products, medical health, leather, food packaging, military products, and civil product air sealing.
Because attapulgite itself has a very high viscosity and high strength after high-temperature sintering, it basically has no dust, which is very important for maintaining the cleanliness and beauty of the inside of insulating glass. Because the raw powder used for molecular sieves basically has no viscosity, it is easy to produce dust after sintering.
Under the national advocacy of energy saving and emission reduction, and environmental protection, in recent years, our insulating glass products have been valued by the country because insulating glass products best meet the requirements of energy saving and emission reduction. But should the raw materials of insulating glass also use more energy-saving and emission-reducing raw and auxiliary materials? Therefore, comprehensively and systematically considering the comprehensive effects of product production is our responsibility.
From the characteristics of attapulgite, environmental protection, and energy saving and emission reduction, the application prospect of attapulgite in special mineral desiccants for insulating glass is broad, and the comprehensive effect is immeasurable.
