So why is clothing prone to mildew? There are several main reasons.
1. Mold is the main cause of clothing mildew, and the root cause of mold reproduction is a humid environment. China's geographical environment is characterized by high humidity and suitable high temperatures in the south, which provides a favorable environment for mold growth.
2. The main materials of clothing are generally cotton, linen, leather, silk, wool, chemical fiber, etc., which have high water content and are easy to absorb water. For example, leather products are very prone to mildew. The water content of leather is generally above 14%, and some are even as high as 18%. When the water content exceeds 12%, there is a risk of mildew.
3. Unclean clothing is another reason for mildew. Oil stains and sweat stains on clothes that are not cleaned are very easy to cause bacterial growth.
4. Improper storage methods. If the clothes are washed but not completely dried before storage, they are very prone to mildew. The basic requirements for clothing storage are a ventilated and dry environment, avoiding direct sunlight. Different materials of clothing have different storage methods. When the season changes and unused clothes are ready to be stored, the collar, cuffs, and placket, which are easily contaminated areas, should be wiped clean with clean water or alcohol solution, and the clothes should be fully dried before stacking.
5. If mildew spots appear on leather clothes, wipe them clean with a towel dipped in soapy water or laundry detergent, rinse with clean water, dry thoroughly, and then apply a layer of jacket oil.
6. The places where clothes are stored, such as cabinets and storage boxes, also need to be checked. When the weather is good, open the cabinet doors for cleaning and sunning. There are actually many molds in the corners and corners of the wardrobe that are not noticed. Be sure to clean them thoroughly. Keep the wardrobe dry and ventilated.
7. The return of humidity in the south is the easiest time for mildew. Purchase desiccants with good moisture absorption performance in advance, such as high-efficiency calcium chloride desiccants and drying strips, and place them in storage cabinets. Put some dry newspapers at the bottom. Don't underestimate the role of desiccants. These inconspicuous small objects can effectively protect items from moisture and mildew.
For manufacturers of export clothing, if they do not pay attention to moisture prevention during transportation, it may cause huge losses. After the finished clothing is packaged, it is placed in a cardboard box and then transported by sea in a container. During the process of ocean transportation, the temperature and humidity inside the container change drastically. Excess water vapor will condense, flowing down the container walls or directly onto the goods, forming container rain, which greatly increases the risk of product dampness and mildew. China is a major trading country. According to statistics from the General Administration of Customs, from January to August 2016, China's cumulative export value of textiles and clothing reached US\$37 billion. If dampness and mildew occur during ocean transportation, the resulting losses will also be huge.
Taking preventive measures in advance is very necessary. Placing a bag of clothing desiccant inside the cardboard box or plastic bag, and hanging 8-12 container drying strips on the container walls and top can effectively prevent products from becoming damp and mildewed due to container rain, reducing the risk of cargo loss.
